FAQ About Detox Programs
What patients qualify for this program?
- Patients who are currently dependent on drugs that contain opiates such as prescription pain pills, heroin, or fentanyl. Dependence on these medications means that the patient will experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms if they abruptly stop using them.
- Patients that are transitioning onto Naltrexone Tablets or Naltrexone Injection (Vivitrol)
How are patients selected?
All patients at Dove Recovery have a Comprehensive Assessment and New Patient Health Examination on their first day of contact with our program. Once these evaluations have been completed, the doctor or nurse practitioner will recommend the program to patients that they feel will benefit from the program.
Is the program mandatory?
No. The program is optional, but we want to make it available for those patients who may feel uncomfortable starting a new medication on their own.
What staff are involved?
Patients will initially complete their comprehensive assessment with a counselor who has training specific to alcoholism and drug addiction. Patients who elect to participate in the detox program will work directly with a registered nurse and a prescriber (Doctor or Nurse Practitioner) who is licensed to practice medicine in the State of Ohio and holds a valid DATA 2000 Waiver.
What medications are used?
After the initial contact day, patients will be prescribed comfort medications. These are medications that specifically treat the symptoms of acute opiate withdrawal. Examples of these medications include:
*Opiate Withdrawal
-Clonidine 0.1-0.4mg BID
-Zofran ODT 4-12mg q8hrs prn Nausea-Ibuprofen 600mg q8hrs prn pain-Gabapentin 300mg TID
*Insomnia-Trazodone (1-2) 50mg Tabs PO qhs-Remeron (1-2) 15mg Tabs PO qhs-Seroquel (1-2) 25mg PO qhs-Melatonin 3-5mg PO qhs
*Restless Legs Syndrome-Requip 0.5-4.0mg qhs
*Nicotine Withdrawal Patches-14-21mg daily
*Generalized Anxiety-Prozac 20-60mg daily
-Buspar 15mg BID-Propranolol 20-60 mg daily
What tests are required?
All patients will initially have:
- A urine drug screen with confirmations
- A hepatic function panel
- A hepatitis panel
- HIV screening
- TB screening
- Females will be tested for pregnancy
