When the Holidays Bring Grief Into Focus in Franklin County

The holiday season can arrive with invitations, familiar routines, and a quiet reminder of who is missing. For someone carrying grief, deciding which gatherings to attend or traditions to keep may take more energy than anyone else can see. There is no single correct way to move through those decisions.
That is the subject of an upcoming free, in-person Grief Matters workshop listed by the ADAMH Board of Franklin County. Cornerstone of Hope plans to host “Honoring Holiday Grief” on Wednesday, November 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at 253 N. State Street in Westerville. ADAMH says a mini-grant supports the session.
The organizer describes the workshop as a chance to consider the benefits and limits of different coping styles. That framing is useful. One person may need a smaller celebration. Another may want to preserve a tradition, step outside for a break, or tell family members in advance what will feel difficult. A strategy can help in one moment and be less useful in another. The point is to notice what fits, rather than to perform cheerfulness on a schedule.
A more workable plan for an imperfect season
If a gathering feels daunting, consider what you can decide before you go. How long do you want to stay? Is there a person you can check in with? Would a simple response help if someone asks a question you are not ready to answer? These are practical choices, not a cure for loss.
For women balancing work, family care, and recovery, the calendar can make it especially easy to put personal grief last. Naming a need for support is an ordinary part of caring for your health. If grief is disrupting sleep, daily functioning, or a recovery plan, a qualified professional can help you think through next steps. The workshop itself is an educational community event; it is not a substitute for individualized care.
